That Little Chip May Not Stay Little
A tiny windshield chip can feel easy to ignore. You notice it while driving, tell yourself you will deal with it later, and then life gets busy. In Phoenix, that can be a costly mistake.
Arizona heat is hard on auto glass. A chip that might sit quietly for weeks in a cooler climate can spread quickly when the windshield is dealing with blazing sun, hot pavement, and cold air conditioning. That little mark in the glass may be more fragile than it looks.
Heat Makes Glass Move
Windshield glass expands and contracts with temperature changes. During a Phoenix summer, the outside of your windshield can become extremely hot while the inside of the vehicle is cooled by air conditioning.
That difference creates stress in the glass. If the windshield already has a chip, that damaged spot can become the weak point. The result is often a crack that starts small and then runs across the windshield.
This can happen after parking in direct sunlight, blasting cold air onto a hot windshield, going through a sudden temperature swing, or hitting a bump while the glass is already under stress.
Freeways Make The Problem Worse
Phoenix area roads are busy, fast, and full of debris. Gravel from trucks, construction materials, and loose road grit can hit your windshield with real force.
A chip from Loop 101, I 17, I 10, US 60, or the 202 may seem minor at first. The problem is that freeway damage often leaves a small impact point with hidden stress around it. Once heat gets involved, the chip can grow.
That is why drivers in Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, Mesa, Peoria, and Scottsdale should not wait too long to have windshield damage checked.
When A Chip Can Be Repaired
Many small chips can be repaired if they are caught early. Repair is often quicker and less expensive than replacement. It can also help stop the damage from spreading.
However, not every chip is repairable. Damage may need replacement if it is too large, directly in the driver’s line of sight, close to the edge of the windshield, or already spreading into a long crack.
The sooner the glass is inspected, the better your chances of avoiding a full replacement.
How To Protect Your Windshield
Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a windshield sunshade. Avoid blasting the defroster or cold air directly onto extremely hot glass. Do not pour cold water on a hot windshield. Most importantly, get chips looked at before they spread.
Phoenix heat is not gentle. Waiting is rarely your friend.
